The purpose of the Phil Woods Scholarship Fund is to provide a yearly scholarship to a deserving alto saxophonist for educational opportunities including jazz camp, college, or university. To that end we will hold at least one fundraiser per year on the first Monday in November to honor Phil Woods and his legacy. Other fundraisers are being discussed for the future.
Born November 2, 1931, Philip Wells Woods was a consistent poll winner, the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from East Stroudsburg University and a 1994 inductee into The American Jazz Hall of Fame. The New School University presented him with the Beacons in Jazz Award in 2001, and he is a 2007 NEA Jazz Master. He also won 5 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Foundation President’s Merit Award 2007 and the Kennedy Center Living Legends in Jazz Award, also in 2007. In 2009 DePaul University presented Phil with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.
