Phil Woods Scholarship Fund

Written by

The purpose of the Phil Woods Scholarship Fund is to provide a yearly scholarship to a deserving alto saxophonist for educational opportunities including jazz camp, college, or university. To that end we will hold at least one fundraiser per year on the first Monday in November to honor Phil Woods and his legacy. Other fundraisers are being discussed for the future.

Born November 2, 1931, Philip Wells Woods was a consistent poll winner, the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from East Stroudsburg University and a 1994 inductee into The American Jazz Hall of Fame. The New School University presented him with the Beacons in Jazz Award in 2001, and he is a 2007 NEA Jazz Master. He also won 5 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Foundation President’s Merit Award 2007 and the Kennedy Center Living Legends in Jazz Award, also in 2007. In 2009 DePaul University presented Phil with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree.

Welcome to the Phil Woods Web Site!

ImageAs tenor sax giant Zoot Sims said as he watched the astronauts land on the moon, "Look at that! Wow! And I'm still playing Indiana!"

That is how I feel about the new technology. (I still play Indiana, but to quote Zoot's partner, Al Cohn, I am using my own changes). It is astounding! I have been writing music (well, entering music, the writing is done before I touch a key - mostly!) using a computer for well over 15 years now, ever since Jill brought info from John LaBarbera about Music Printer Plus, one of the first music writing programs. It was DOS based and is now relegated to dinosaur status. I still have it on my hard-drive and it contains thousands of pieces, charts, tunes, etc. I am gradually entering them in my new program, Sibelius (now version 4). What a difference! It is too lengthy to explain but what a giant leap for composers.

In 2004 I sent 15 arrangements by snail mail to Spain and they never got there! After a couple of months they came back. Enter PDF files. I checked Sibelius and it is compatible with Adobe Acrobat. Say no more - I was off and running! And so dear friends and fans I am putting all of my jams and jellies onto my web page. I have my dear wife Jill and my number one son Garth to thank for helping me stay au courant with life in the new millennium. So welcome to the up to date, state-of the-art Patron's Club page of yours truly.

This is just the beginning! I plan to make my complete creative output (over 50 years worth!) available through this medium. Please let me know what you think, what you would like, comments, criticism (I can take it - I have outlived three generations of music critics. They're gone - I am still ticking and bopping!). Welcome! Bienvenu! Bienvenida! Benvenuto! Wilkommen! Kahngehsooroo! Boas-vindas! Het welkom! Mottaskelse!
